Becoming an adult is a milestone that carries both excitement and challenge. For young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), this transition isn’t simply about getting older, it’s about discovering independence, building everyday life skills, finding meaningful community roles, and feeling confident to shape a future that’s theirs. Yet all too often, families tell us that this journey can feel overwhelming, fragmented, or lacking the right mix of support, opportunity and understanding.
That’s why The Care Pod Pathways CIO is so proud to launch its Preparing for Adulthood Pilot — a fully funded, hands-on 12-week programme designed to champion young people’s strengths, aspirations and practical life goals as they move toward adulthood.
Why Transition Support Matters More Than Ever
Young people with SEND are just as ambitious, creative and capable as their peers, yet research and family feedback consistently show that without tailored support, the transition into adult life can be tougher to navigate. Too often:
planning for life after school starts too late, with limited chance to explore options;
opportunities for real-world experience in employment, volunteering and independence are sparse;
the shift from education services to adult support systems can feel fragmented or intimidating;
families can struggle to find community spaces where their young person’s confidence and practical abilities can grow in a safe and positive way.
For families and young people alike, the need for structured, meaningful transition support isn’t a “nice to have” — it’s a foundational part of building a life that’s both fulfilling and empowering.
What Makes The Preparing for Adulthood Pilot Different
The Preparing for Adulthood Pilot isn’t about classroom worksheets or exams; it’s about real life, real skills and real confidence. Running over 12 weeks with no cost to families, this small-group, community-based programme focuses on the things that matter:
Independent living skills: from cooking safe, nutritious meals to managing daily routines.
Communication and self-confidence: supporting young people to express themselves, connect with others and build social independence.
Community engagement: navigating real-world environments with support and encouragement.
Volunteering and employment pathways: exploring what meaningful work looks like and understanding how to take steps toward it.
Understanding and accessing adult services: demystifying how support works after school and equipping families with knowledge and confidence.
Each participant works with a person-centred pathway tailored to their strengths, interests and pace, because every young person’s journey is unique and deserves to be respected.
It All Happens at The Launch Pod — A Purposeful Space
Rather than a classroom, the programme takes place at The Launch Pod (Ellis Square), a calm, welcoming space designed for transition learning. Here, young people experience:
safe and inclusive small-group activities;
supportive, purposeful, hands-on tasks;
confidence-building experiences that reflect real adult environments.
In partnership with Selsey Town Council, participants will also join community sessions, such as cooking and food preparation, in real community spaces. These practical activities aren’t just skills training: they’re opportunities to build independence, make choices, grow in confidence and feel capable of life beyond support systems.
What Happens After the Pilot?
This pilot is only the beginning. As the 12 weeks draw to a close, every young person will be supported to take meaningful next steps, whether that’s:
continuing with accredited life-skills programmes like ASDAN, which recognise real progress;
transitioning into ongoing weekly provision with The Care Pod Pathways;
moving into supported volunteering, training or community participation.
Families tell us how crucial that “next stage” support is, it ensures the progress young people make isn’t suddenly interrupted, creating continuity and confidence instead of stress and uncertainty.
Why The Care Pod Pathways Supports This Work
At The Care Pod Pathways, our mission has always been about belonging, growth and dignity in community life. We believe that young people with SEND deserve the same opportunities to thrive, not just within education, but in the world around them. We see the value of community-based, tailored transition support every day: in the smiles, the small triumphs and the breakthroughs that happen when a young person feels understood, supported and encouraged.
This pilot isn’t just a programme, it’s a statement of belief:
that every young adult has strengths worth celebrating,
that independence isn’t a destination but a journey,
and that with the right support, young people with SEND can step into adult life with confidence, resilience and hope.
